Working with PDFs

The PDF tools you need, without the extra steps.

PDF files are useful because they keep documents consistent across devices, but making changes to them can be surprisingly awkward. A simple task like removing a page, changing the order of pages, or extracting text can turn into a multi-step process.

Rockspace brings those common operations together in one place. Choose the tool that matches the job, make the changes you need, and create a new processed PDF or extracted file from your document.

The tools are designed around specific PDF operations rather than trying to hide everything behind one complicated interface.

Choose the right tool

Different PDF problems need different operations. Here is a quick way to find the right place to start.

01ORGANIZE

Change the structure

Rearrange pages, remove pages you no longer need, rotate pages into the correct orientation, or build a new document from selected pages.

02CHANGE

Change the page itself

Crop pages to a useful area, add page numbers, place watermarks, or make visual edits to a document.

03EXTRACT

Convert and extract

Turn PDF pages into image files, extract readable text, or use OCR when the document contains scanned pages.

04PREPARE

Prepare files for sharing

Reduce file size, protect documents with a password, or unlock a protected PDF when you already have the required password.

Behind the tools

How Rockspace PDF tools work.

Each tool is built around a particular operation instead of treating every PDF task as the same problem.

01

Page operations

Tools such as reorder, rotate, delete, crop, and page numbering work with the individual pages that make up a PDF.

02

Content extraction

Conversion and extraction tools render pages or read their available text so that information can be used outside the original PDF.

03

Document processing

Merge, compression, protection, unlocking, and watermarking produce a processed version of the document based on your chosen settings.

04

A separate result

Most tools create a processed output rather than replacing your original file, making it easier to keep the source document available.

Common PDF tasks

Start with the problem, not the file.

Too many pages?

Delete unwanted pages, reorder the remaining ones, or create a new PDF from selected pages.

Pages facing the wrong way?

Rotate individual pages or apply the same orientation change across the document.

File too large?

Use the compression tool to target a smaller output size while balancing size and document quality.

Need the text?

Extract available PDF text directly or use OCR for scanned, image-based pages.

Need to share it safely?

Add password protection to a PDF before sending it to someone else.

Need a different format?

Convert PDF pages into JPG or PNG images when you need individual page files.

Questions

PDF, explained.

A few things worth knowing before choosing a tool.

Which PDF tool should I use?+

Start with the operation you want to perform. Use Merge when combining files, Reorder or Delete Pages when changing document structure, Crop when trimming page boundaries, and Compress when reducing file size. For extracting information, use PDF to Text, PDF to JPG, PDF to PNG, or OCR depending on the document.

Can I work with scanned PDFs?+

It depends on the task. A scanned PDF may contain pages as images rather than selectable text. For those documents, OCR is the appropriate tool when you need to recognize and extract the text from the page.

Do the tools replace my original PDF?+

The PDF tools generally create a new processed file rather than modifying the original file you selected. The exact output and filename depend on the tool you use.

What happens after processing?+

Each tool produces an output based on the operation and settings you selected. Depending on the tool, that may be another PDF, image files, or extracted text.

Are all PDF files the same?+

No. PDFs can contain selectable text, images, vector graphics, scanned pages, embedded fonts, forms, and other structures. That is why different tools may behave differently depending on the contents of a particular document.
