When a PDF stops behaving

Repair a damaged PDF without rebuilding it from scratch.

A damaged PDF can fail to open, produce warnings, or behave strangely when another application tries to read it. RockSpace PDF Repair attempts to reconstruct the document structure and creates a new PDF that can be opened and processed normally.

Input

Damaged PDF

The document may contain structural problems that prevent PDF readers or other software from handling it correctly.

Output

Rebuilt PDF

qpdf reconstructs the document and writes a new PDF instead of simply copying the original file.

How it works

Three steps behind the repair.

01

Load the PDF

Add one or more PDF files to the repair queue. Each document is handled independently so you can see which files succeed or fail.

02

Reconstruct it

The file is passed to qpdf, which attempts to reconstruct the PDF structure and write a fresh document.

03

Check the result

Review the repair status, compare the original and repaired file sizes, inspect any warnings, and download the rebuilt PDF.

Useful when

Some PDF problems need a structural repair.

A PDF refuses to open

If a document has structural damage, rebuilding the PDF can give compatible readers a fresh document to work with.

Another app reports warnings

The repair process collects warnings and diagnostic output so you can see whether qpdf encountered anything unusual.

You need a fresh PDF

The result is a newly written PDF rather than an image-based copy of every page.

You have several files

Multiple PDFs can be added to the queue and repaired individually, with completed files available for download.

An important distinction

Repair is not the same as recreating a PDF.

This tool does not turn every page into an image and rebuild the document from screenshots. The original PDF bytes are passed to qpdf's reconstruction engine, which produces a newly written PDF. That means the result depends on what can be recovered from the original document structure.

A severely damaged or fundamentally incomplete file may still fail to repair. When that happens, the tool reports the failure instead of presenting an unsuccessful file as a repaired document.

Under the hood

A reconstruction engine, not a page converter.

The browser starts a qpdf runner using the configured worker, JavaScript, and WebAssembly files. The uploaded PDF is read into memory and supplied to qpdf as input.pdf.

qpdf then runs with warning handling enabled and writes the result as repaired.pdf. RockSpace collects both warnings and stderr output so the repair report can expose useful diagnostic information.

Once the output is available, the tool creates a PDF download named after the original file with -repaired.pdfappended to it.

FAQ

Questions worth answering before you repair.

What does PDF Repair actually do?

It passes the original PDF through qpdf's reconstruction process and writes a new PDF. It is intended for documents with structural problems rather than for editing the content of a normal PDF.

Will every damaged PDF be repaired?

No. Repair depends on how much of the original PDF can still be interpreted and reconstructed. A file that is too incomplete or severely damaged may still fail.

Does repair convert the PDF into images?

No. The implementation sends the original PDF bytes to qpdf and generates a newly written PDF. It does not rebuild the document by rendering each page as an image.

Can I repair multiple PDFs?

Yes. Multiple PDF files can be added to the repair queue. Each file receives its own repair status, output, warnings, or error message.

Where can I find the repaired file?

Each successful repair can be downloaded individually, and the workspace also provides a Download all repaired action when several files have completed.
